Album Info

When two artists of the caliber of Leonid Hambro and Jascha Zayde have been playing together for as long as they have, their performances tend to merge into one. Just as the two hands of a piano virtuoso are controlled by the artist’s conception of how the music should sound, so two minds working as one control these two pairs of hands. Prominent soloists in their own right – Zayde has concertized since the age of five, and has soloed with the leading symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Canada, while Hambro, besides his own concerts and recordings, is the official pianist of the New York Philharmonic – the Hambro-Zayde team has been a unit for over a decade. Their weekly show on Radio Station WQXR has been a must for New York music lovers since its inception in 1948. Besides the hundreds of duo-piano concerts that Hambro and Zayde have given, there have been performances on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Dave Garroway Show and other T.V. programs. They seem to have that rare knack of being able to bring to life practically all styles of music, from the light-headedness of Friml’s Butterfly Waltz to the majesty of a Handel Theme And Variations, from the dreamy and ethereal quality of Debussy’s Reverie to the impassioned assertiveness of Chopin’s earthy Polonaise In A Major or from the stylized pseudo-Oriental glitter of a Japanese Dancing Girl to the uncluttered simplicity of a Mozart sonata. Here, in their first recording for SESAC, Leonid Hambro and Jascha Zayde present a showcase designed to exhibit the heights of their virtuosity, the width of their range and the breath-taking perfection of their ensemble.
