Album Info

There are two different and equally fascinating sides to two-piano programs. One has to do with ensemble precision and a kind of virtuoso union of mind and fingers that enables two performers to function like one. The other makes it possible to extend the boundaries of piano interpretation by revealing melodic and harmonic subtleties that even the most gifted pair of hands cannot always bring to light. The renditions of Hambro and Zayde give ample evidence of both of these facets. In this, their second album for SESAC Recordings they have chosen a program of immortal melodies from the pen of Chopin, Schubert, Liszt, Tschaikowsky, Rachmaninoff and other great composers. The melodic appeal is assured and everlasting, the performances are examples of technical perfection and the two-piano writing adheres faithfully to the original inspiration, yet adds something revelatory to each of the compositions. Individually, Leonid Hambro and Jascha Zayde are outstanding concert performers. As a team they make an impressive combination. And when they address themselves to the music penned by the formidable line-up on the right, what can the result be but topflight listening enjoyment – for all tastes?
