Album Info

Besides its many concerts, the Purdue University Band presents a different half-time and pre-game show at each home and away football game. Since each pre-game and half-time show utilizes approximately ten different formations and as many as twenty musical selections, the Band’s repertory must, of necessity, be quite diversified. This album offers a selected group of rousing and spirited favorites featured in these on-the-field spectacles. Directed by Al G. Wright, the Band captures the flavor of the many different cadences, of the auxiliary units such as the Fanfare Trumpet Corps, and of the flashing, high-stepping precision seen at Purdue football games. The pageant of more than 200 bandsmen, majorettes and auxiliary units literally covering the gridiron is indeed a thrilling sight – it is equally thrilling to hear. Half of the selections herein are by the renowned composer and bandmaster, Karl L. King. Al- though possessed of a quiet, unassuming manner and an inherent dignity, Mr. King is a militant and enthusiastic champion of band music. He has written well over 200 compositions, many of them stirring football marches. His rip-roaring Mighty Minnesota, dedicated to Gerald Prescott and the University of Minnesota Bands, is a tribute to the “Golden Gophers,” arch Big Ten rivals of the Purdue “Boilermakers.” Columbian March honors Columbia University in New York City, and Pageantry March salutes the pageantry show precision marching pioneered by Purdue bands. Other King numbers include the fast-paced, come-out-fighting Fidelity March; the snappy, strut-along formation entry, Apollo March; King Henry, dedicated to Henry Fillmore, a noted figure in band music circles; and The Goldman Band, a sincere tribute to that venerable organization. The latter march, one of the 100 most popular in the United States, pays homage to Edwin Franko Goldman and the heritage of musical appreciation his bands have bestowed on the nation. Perennial Purdue gridiron opponents, the “Wildcats” of Northwestern are hailed in Pride Of The Purple, which composer Richard W. Bowles dedicated to John P. Paynter and the Northwestern University Bands. Mr. Bowles is also represented by the syncopated Blue Heights, a tribute to the Madison Heights, Indiana, High School Band, and its director, Francis Barker, and by the highly volatile title tune, Burst Of Flame. Two notable contributions from the pen of Paul Yoder are also performed – the Southern-flavored Bristol March in honor of the Southeastern Band Festival held in Bristol, Va.-Tenn., and the happy-go-lucky hoop-dee-do entitled State Fair. The vigorous Range Riders by Thomas F. Darcy, Jr., is filled with exciting elevens as the Texas “Longhorns” or the Wyoming “Cowboys.” The color and spectacle of another field, the circus arena, is radiantly depicted by the versatile Purdue crew in Circus Bandwagon, a main tent attraction by Merle Evans, often called ‘The Toscanini of the Big Top.’
