I really love music, but with time, I listen less and I become more exigent. My collection of CDs shrinks with years.
My last favourite was Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden. I like music to be textured, emotional and challenging. Cycle de Rêves is that kind of music.
The tracks are long, imaginative and thrilling journeys through dreamed landscapes. This album is ambitious (but not pretentious) and this is what we need! The only deceiving point of Cycle de Rêves is the repetition of same rhythms and musical structures – but this is corollary of a concept album. The whole album is in reality one long track that leads us through different stages of dream and consciousness.
Phär has gained new members since their eponymous album and also depth. Since the first album was a short collection of pieces, Cycle de Rêves could be considered as their real first album. And for a debut, this is a strong one! As they come from Québec (precisely from the animated musical scene of Rimouski) we feel a strong inspiration of Harmonium (pieces like “Histoires sans paroles”, but also a similar concept album, L’Heptade) and Godspeed You Black Emperor!. This album, is at several moments typical of Quebec folk sound, but is enough innovative and symphonic to be universal.
“Clin d’oeil”, “Dernier automne” and “Épilogue” are the best tracks as they create different moods, but this concept album merits to be listened as a whole.

This is the best album I’ve listened in years! Just behind Ágætis byrjun of Sigur Rós. And Cycle de Rêves is maybe the most joyful of my favorite albums.

    Merci Phär!

    --------

After a few months, I think I exaggerated in this first review. Cycles de Rêves is maybe not as innovative and achieved as Spirit of Eden (1988) and Agaetis Byrjun (1999) were at their time. It is to see what they’ll do in the future. But I still find in this music something unique that I never heard before and still all the influences I like. I hardly believe it, and I think I came on gogoyoko just to discover this group! Hope this journey continues.

beautiful dreams! I came to Rimouski on an exchange program from BC 30+ years ago -- and went X-country skiing on trails through incredible maple forests -- here in BC we have ski lifts and people racing by -- there it was silent in the forest -- peaceful -- beautiful -- It was a dream like ski trip that I've never forgotten, and never experienced again... if I had put head phones on and the trees made music... it might sound just like this.
