Album Info

Improvised and recorded live at London's Jazz Cafe, Freesoul Sessions third official EP release features MdCL with Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman (Reel People), Jason Yarde, Richard Spaven (Ty/Guru's Jazzmatazz) and more on three spontaneous stage-born creations. The concept of the project is simple - MdCL armed with MPC and keyboards is joined by a rotating cast of top soul, jazz, hip hop and beat-artists coming together in the spirit of total improvisation. Stylistically rooted in the sound of West London, Freesoul Sessions does what has never been done before - each and every time, the live show is totally unique and a one-off experience for the musicians and the audience. The first thing the audience hears is the metronome click of the MPC as MdCL builds beats from nothing, building on the beats with bass lines and keys as the other musicians join him in improvising beat-centric music laced by the vocalists who complete the session's asthetic. MdCL - MPC3000 drums, synth bass, rhodes, piano, keys, fx Bembe Segue, Vanessa Freeman + Tawiah - vocals Jason Yarde - horns, fx Richard Spaven - live drums Kaidi Tatham - live congas ('Won't Bring It Down' only) The EP opens with Vanessa Freeman vibing a downtempo soul classic out of thin air live on stage - MdCL, Jason Yarde and Richard Spaven set up a Dilla-meets-uk jazz vibe that Vanessa completes with the timeless lyric 'Where Can I Go'. 'Won't Bring It Down' comes with the heavy dancefloor bruk workout led by Bembe and MdCL along with Tawiah, Richard Spaven and Agent K Kaidi Tatham on congas improvising an underground bullet. 'Bahia 2010' finishes off the EP with a carnival style floor filler - full Brazilian drum and percussion vibes with MdCL leading the way on the MPC and keys, Bembe channeling Flora, Jason Yarde dropping the ill horn section and the likes of Richard Spaven, Snowboy and Tawiah bringing extra vibe. Remember, none of this was preconceived, rehearsed, discussed or prepared in any other way... this is how it happened live on stage.... Freesoul Sessions.
