Album Info
Basson Quintet Op. 6 (Cambiamenti I): Cambiamenti means changes or transformations. The composition originated as a commission from the Berlin concert series "Unerhoerte Musik (Unheard-of-Music)" for the rare combination bassoon and string quartet. It represents a new type of the traditional variations. The seed of the composition is a simple motive that undergoes all kinds of treatment: It passes from one instrument to another, is stretched, embellished, pushed together, reduced, upended, played backwards, made into a harmony and altered in timbre. One of the episodes is a double composition: a duet of bassoon and first violin against the string trio's pizzicato. Through further development after each of the initial performances, a composite form has arisen, free and organic. The musicians comprising the quintet are all members of the Berlin Sinfonie-Orchestra: Matthias Benker-Steiner (viola), Barennie Moon (1. violin), Jana Kraemer (2. violin), Jae-win Song (violoncello).Speculum vitae Op. 7: Mirror of Life is an artistic treatment of reflections on human existence. Many people should be able to find themselves described in the chosen Bible texts, even if the living conditions pictured in the beginning seem to be overtly affluent. A guiding idea during the composition was that of standing at an altar and observing oneself in a diptych consisting of mirrors. One finds consolation in the words at the end of the second movement – and before then a challenge to maintain an attitude towards life required for consolation. Mirror of Life is thus recognition as well as creed, an expression of belief and confidence. The texts to the first movement Interroganda (Questions) are: Ecclesiastes 2:1,8; Proverbs 5:12-13 and Job 3:11,24-26. The second movement Cognoscendum (Cognition) follows Ecclesiastes 4:1-3 and Ecclesiastes 3:12-15.The ars-nova-ensemble Berlin has achieved international acclaim for its performances of contemporary music.Lieder Op. 3 (The Blue Ones): A selection of Hermann Hesse's poems forms the basis of this work. They distinguish themselves by dint of their polished choice of words, clear delineation and strength of expression. The songs were commissioned by the soprano Dagmar Wietschorke, to whom they are dedicated. In three of them, Nature and in her the color blue are sung of (The Quiet Cloud, The Height of Summer and Evening Blue). Symphony and The Glass Bead Game, with their focus on musical form, serve as a type of counterpoint.>br />Dagmar Wietschorke is a member of RIAS Chamber Choir, Philip Mayers a piano accompanist of international repute.Woodwind Quintet Op. 12 (Cambiamenti II): This work is the second of a series concerning transformations. It is a composite form, in which a theme and its four variations are united with movements of symphonic character. The variations follow their own line, which, however, stands in connection to the movements as an element of either transition, confirmation or contrast. All thematic material in the work is drawn from the initial idea, a powerful melody that contains the seeds of every further development in the piece. Thus, a motivically unified, self-contained form arises, yet rich in contrast and displaying a broad spectrum of timbres unique to the woodwinds. The Musagetes-Quintet is a long-standing ensemble comprised of free-lance musicians in Berlin. Its main focus is on works of the 20th and 21st centuries, especially those of Latin America. Stephan Landgrebe (clarinet), Maike Wegener (oboe), Elisabeth Boehm-Christl (bassoon), Yasuko Imanaga-Fuchs (flute), Arturo Pantaleón Mendoza-Jaensch (horn).
