And I thought it was Fred Dineage
There’s always a problem in classifying a maverick (there’s one classification), Jay Fisher (Apple Rabbit) sounds like a folk singer (another) but he uses idioms from other genres; most notably electronica (another), so he has to be folktronica (another) right? Pretty much wrong. Take ‘Shoot’ for instance, you could say it sounds a bit like Radiohead (with a better singer) dabbling in dub and mixing in some flute.

Fisher does twist things around though. He’s good with texture, he uses electronics to provide the backdrop, onto this he sews the songs firmament. For ‘Run It Down’ that’s a graceful vocal melody, acoustic guitar and elegant stripes of strings. He knits the elements together so well that you forget that they might jar and just sink into the songs.

‘1000 Years’ starts with just acoustic guitar, voice and keys, so far so conventional, then female vocals join in and a mechanical music box ticks along in the background, tiny chimes behind the harmonies. The middle eight sounds like a trumpet with asthma, the chorus appears and the song glides serenely on. ‘Go to Sleep’ glimmers like elusive thoughts on the edge of slumber, the electronic stew sometimes sounding like Bedlam heard through a wall, it’s the deepest he dips into electronica.

‘Sing to Me’ opens like a post-rock sketch, vocals soon coalesce and after a minute or so Fisher shows his absolute skill as a chorus breaks through as sweet as any you’ll hear, it’s like stumbling across a rare orchid in a meadow. ‘Wrong Again’ is a dance song, think crusty with a hook, he’s definitely better at synthesising rather than indulging in genre exercises. He approaches a traditional rock song on ‘Get Paid’ the perfect distillation of his craft is heard on ‘Queen of the Suburbs’ drones are mixed with acoustic guitar and with accordion providing some depth, the song opens slowly like a shy flower protecting its nectar.

Fisher has made a record that mixes the experimental with the traditional, he mostly gets it right, and when he does the results are excellent.
