The unmistakable touch of Alfredo Antonini And His Orchestra makes ‘Romantic Classics’ an unusual listening experience. Its melodies range from classics to lighter airs that spell romance with exciting rhythms, subtle charm, often with a touch of traditional folk patterns, yet all are ageless in appeal. Of Mozart’s countless number of wonderful piano solo works, the C Major Sonata is perhaps the best known. Alfredo Antonini’s orchestral treatment of the Sonata’s first movement retains the work’s delicate spirit with true artistry and understanding. For a romantic mood touched by spirited fire, Czardas by Monti sparks the program with often-heard, but always fresh attraction. Waldteufel’s lilting and delightful waltz, Espana, is rich with flashing, typically Spanish colors. Romance hovers over the measures of Two Guitars with its brooding Russian moods, as expressive of the hearts of the people as the infectuous rhythms of the exuberant Italian Tarantella. Tenderness of romance is reflected by The Lotus Pool, while sadness and heartbreak underscore Rondine Al Nido – a ballad of touching nostalgia. And for a romantic touch in music, few could ever excel Frederic Chopin, the poet of the piano. In this album we hear his immortal Nocturne In E Flat, in a tasteful and effective arrangement by Alfredo Antonini displaying the outstanding versatility that has made him popular both on the air and in symphonic circles. Maestro Antonini has been associated with noteworthy programs on CBS and CBS-TV for many years. He appears as guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic quite regularly and has conducted the leading orchestras of the United States, Latin America and Europe.
