The guitar magazine Akustik Gitarre (issue July/August 2010) wrote about Hubert Käppel's celebrated album Romantic Guitar Music: Nearly 20 years after the original recording and after having been for a long time sold out, this album is finally available in reprint (...) After his grandiose Bach recording, Käppel creates another milestone of the modern aritstic guitar playing with this album. (...) The combination of his highly musical playing, and still impressive sonority and clarity, paired with an unwavering sovereign technique, makes it easy to forget that the music here (Brahms) was not orginally written for the guitar. Käppel's playing reminds us of the interpretive approach of the ingenious pianist Glenn Gould; we hear the guitar in its purest form on this recording, but always serving the purpose of the music. Also from the point of production, it's a must-have masterpiece and thus belongs in every CD collection.
