Album Info
London-based purveyor of intelligent dance music Ryan L. West aka RIVAL CONSOLES returns with his sophomore album KID VELO, released track by track over the course of 11 weeks. Every Monday will see a new album track being streamed exclusively from just one online portal connected to one exclusive online store, before going global on Fridays. ‘With brains supposedly adapting to online networks and attention spans reduced to 140 characters at a time, this is bite-sized music for a bite-sized world.’ – Robert Raths, founder of Erased Tapes Records The campaign kicked off on April 11 and will cumulate in the official album release on June 27, 2011. 'There are a few labels which you can just trust. Erased Tapes is possibly one of them. One of their lot in Rival Consoles is doing something relatively novel and streaming a new track from his forthcoming record Kid Velo in various places across the internet over the next 11 weeks. We've got the VERY FIRST track and it's actually really, really good' – Drowned In Sound Third on: S.P.K.R.S. evokes images of an antagonist’s evil, corrupt police force. Lurking deep in the futuristic suburbs, S.P.K.R.S. try to dispatch Kid Velo. Surrounded by studio equipment and possibly spending more time with speakers than people, Ryan L. West explains: ‘The synths on this track are heavy, distorted and cold. The opening sample from Dr. Strangelove is there to juxtapose the cold distortion and make it feel even more dehumanised.’ As the song progresses, evil forces continue to destroy anything in their path until finally a gothic chorus erupts, which could symbolise Kid Velo being cornered by hundreds of S.P.K.R.S. At the moment of no hope, the music decays and Kid Velo smashes through his enemies and escapes... [to be continued]. What press had to say about Rival Consoles’ debut album IO: 'West’s Rival Consoles project revives the schism between the commercial house music of suburban hell-holes and the perverted beats of electronica’s golden boys. A massive slice of jagged grandiosity... 'IO' is a party record even snobs can enjoy.' (7/10) - NME 'A new sulphuric wave is about to wash over our dancing forms and reduce us to boogieing bones - and Ryan West, aka Rival Consoles - is riding it on an acid-proof surfboard… leading the crusade against tired welterweight club rhythms' - DJ MAG Fantastic Four Feature 'If you miss the Aphex Twin who wrote songs that lit up warehouse raves at 3 a.m. but still tied your brain into knots, do yourself a favor and check out Rival Consoles. West is a nascent IDM hero on IO' (9/10) - XLR8R 'Writhes in a field of its own, twitching and buzzing like little else... One of the best releases of its kind this year' – CLASH ‘I just got into this guy. The album's great. It turns from electronica into a real kinda disco groove. Superb’ – James Chapman, MAPS 'Rival Consoles finally comes in full album length and satisfies all along the line. His tracks appear to be little short of celestial, are catchy and contain several grandiose melodies' (5/6) –RAVELINE ‘Ibiza yesterday, Berlin today, Miami tomorrow. You don't need to get on a plane to explore the international club-scape: putting on IO by Rival Consoles will do' (4/5) –MUSIKEXPRESSMore From This Artist (13)
