Album Info

Duncan McKnight and Iain Ross met in Berlin in the summer of 2008
where they soon starting playing and recording together. Sharing a
similar lack of both accommodation and funds, the pair often found
themselves staying together at friends apartments. In these temporary
homes they would build makeshift studios and record for hours. It was
out of these hazy sessions in other people's living rooms and kitchens,
on often borrowed equipment, that Satan is a Farmer took shape.

In may 2009, Duncan fell from a third floor window in Reykjavik,
Iceland whilst on tour with his other band, The Virgin Tongues.
Duncan's subsequent hospitalization and injuries have put current
recording projects and live shows temporarily on hold. It was largely
as a result of the bands musing on mortality following the accident
that Satan is a Farmer was released.

A lot of the acoustic based releases making the rounds this year seem to be following the same tired 60s and 70s template of Neil young/Nick Drake/Van Morrison. The end result of this is that they all seem to have the atmosphere of a stale fart.

At least The Flaming Banshees are trying a something different with their Satan is a Farmer EP, by ransacking 80s new wave and psych rock for its influences instead. Don’t believe me? Then you’ll understand when you listen to tracks such as 1000 Days of Sleep (Echo & the Bunnymen) Morning Makeup (REM) or If You Love Somebody (err... the Traveling Wilburys?).

The EP also puts a lot more effort into the production by adding transient sounds (songbirds, clinking bottles, and rattling keys) that help to flesh out the atmospherics, making it sound more sparkly and retro-fresh than a lot of piddle that’s currently clogging Skifan these days.

Could Berlin get any cooler? Some of the most talented expats have landed there, like Scottish born Iain Ross and Duncan McKnight from California. Both formed The Flaming Banshees, rock'n'roll spirits in gaelic folklore. Also a founding member of The Virgin Tongues, McKnight’s side project is a refreshing effort, the type of music that brightens your day and gets you singing along in the rain. Satan Is A Farmer is indeed a six track aphorism with diverse atmospheres that bear a peculiar trademark: they all sound like little poems or tales that have been adapted musically, the Banshees being masters in the art of storytelling. Captivating vocals make each song more endearing, turning you into a companion or sonic confidant of the band, letting you share each second of the boys’ adventures, as if you were reading your roommate’s diary.
These goldsmith pop songs could be the soundtrack to any day with a hint of magic, with the spooky Halloween gem Skeleton Cabaret that is awesomely eerie. Start the ride by catching the “Train Back Home” and let these demon spirits spread the love germ.

I've had this album on vinyl for a while and it's hardly ever become detached from my turntable. it's got this unique blend of sensible songwriting, experimentation, hooks and insight that you rarely see from a couple of 22 year olds. Satan is a Farmer is an excellent peek into the songwriting capabilities of these guys and there isn't a song on it that isn't great. 1000 Days of Sleep and Rick Was Right are stand-outs among giants but it's in If You Love Somebody, where Duncan and Iian seem to mock formula-pop while mastering the craft at the same time, that it's evident that they're just getting started.

I don't usually rate albums this high, but this is the rare exception. 9.8.
