Album Info
‘Symphonic Vignettes, Vol. 7’ is an exciting collection of great musical masterpieces performed by the New World Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Raymond Thomas. The musical content of this recording ranges from the nationalism of Russia’s Balakireff, Glinka and Glazunoff, to the German-Viennese romantic school of Graener and Strauss and the French lyricism of Bizet and Saint-Saëns. Mily A. Balakireff (1836-1910), an avowed proponent of Russian nationalism, was the guiding star of the “great Five of Russian Music.” He is represented in this recording with the Slavic Overture, a selection characteristic of his ability as a master craftsman. Balakireff’s use of folk melody emphasizes his nationalistic feelings. In his symphonic treatment, statements of quiet lyricism alternate with the wild barbarism associated with early Russian history. The music of Alexander Glazunoff (1865-1936) was brought to the public’s attention through the efforts of Balakireff who assisted many of Russia’s composers to gain recognition. Glazunoff’s music, in contrast to the older musician, is more romantic in style and shows definite western European influences. His Waltz from ‘Scenes De Ballet, Op. 52’ composed in 1895, is extremely lyrical and clearly demonstrates his keen sense of instrumental writing. One of the first major composers to exert an influence on Russian musical nationalism prior to Balakireff, was Michael I. Glinka (1804-1857) whose creative talents covered the field of opera, orchestra works, chamber music, piano and vocal pieces. Krakowiak, a folk dance, is a bright and spontaneous composition showing the influences that folk music had on his compositions. Peter Ilich Tschaikowsky (1840-1893), a contemporary of Balakireff, contributed volumes of great music to the world’s listening pleasure. One of his compositions that millions enjoy, is the famous ballet, ‘Swan Lake.’ The Scene from this large work is a selection of surging emotional beauty. Rhythmically appealing but in a manner quite different from the work of the Russian composers mentioned above is the music of Johann Strauss, Jr. (1825-1899). One of his immortal waltzes, Voices Of Spring, a light, lilting and vivacious composition, is suggestive of the charm and gaiety of springtime. Strauss has cleverly woven into the pattern of this work many subtle instrumental bird calls , the harbingers of spring. Paul Graener (1872-1944) has made use of similar musical devices to enhance his symphonic poem, Comedietta. His Sarabande, on the other hand, is a very slow and formal classical dance form to which Graener has imparted his own great sensitivity. Georg Graner, who besides being a composer was also a music critic and writer, is represented in this recording with a stirring and dramatic rendition of the Finale from his First Symphony. In contrast with the emotionalism and somewhat heavy-handed humor of some German composers, the French school of Bizet and Saint-Saëns is replete with light, carefree lyricism. Georges Bizet’s (1833-1875) ‘L’Arlesienne Suite’ has achieved nearly as much fame as did his opera ‘Carmen.’ The Andante from the ‘Prelude’ of this composition is emotional and sombre, yet it possesses the clarity and flowing lyricism associated with the French. Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) achieved in his March Heroique a similar lyrical quality. As always, his music is noted for its purity of style and perfection of form, especially in the balance between rich instrumentation and expansive lyricism.More From This Artist (4)
