Album Info
“Annemarie Zimakoff (...) did the biggest impression. Mainly because of her strange, very bright, beautiful, longing, innocent young girls voice, which made the hair in my neck stand up. You have to go back in time to the young Kate Bush or Harriet Wheeler from unfortunately no longer existing The Sundays to find a voice that matches this”, Ole Rosenstand Svidt from GAFFA writes after a concert with Annemarie Zimakoff. In 2008 she releases her debut album and gets a long row of reviews and a lot of praise along the way. Despite the recognition from the re- viewers she remains relatively unknown to most people. That is the reason why Annemarie one day11⁄2 year later sits in her room and thinks: There’s noone who has heard my music. I am “The Girl Without Music”. Paradoxically it ended up being exactly the title song “The Girl Without Music”, that Nis Bøgvad (Back to Back and manager of Nordstrøm) chose to cooperate with her about. And today the song is played in a remix version on National Danish Radio P3. The song is about carrying the music in your heart, but not being able to reach a broad audience. It is also an analogy to Annemarie’s own life that constantly is challenged between the music and an office job – because you have to get bread on the table. And the life as a musician contains more rejections than a profile on a dating site.
TOUR LIFE STARTS
Even though the attention fails to come, Annemarie gets the taste of touring life, when she plays concerts in Berlin several times and later in New York, where she books concerts and performs at open mics each night. After that Annemarie goes to Nashville and plays at the legendary Blue Bird Café, where you normally have to be in queue for weeks to get to play.
THE SONGS COME CRAWLING OUT
The text universe that is partly self-biographical tells stories about the queen that fights
for her throne, about love and about the battle against inner demons. In Nashville the love song “Infinite for You” is written to her boyfriend. But it is in a small hut hidden behind trees and mountains in Norway that more of the songs from the album come to live. With the view of snow covered mountains, sheep’s grassing on the meadow and while the rain creates a drum pattern on the roof, Annemarie writes “Confidence” and “Without Dreams under Your Wings” about having courage to take chances, about believing in yourself and your dreams.
IN THE HOUSE OF SONGS
In March Annemarie went on tour in USA again – this time in Austin, Texas, where she co-wrote with American songwriters and played showcases. Here she stayed in the House of Songs that co- operates with DJBFA and where also other Danish artists like Ane Trolle, Hush and Poul Krebs stayed.
THE INSPIRATION IS AWOKEN
The travelling and the meeting with different people has inspired and let to a song like “Plastic Plates”, which is about a young woman in New York longing for the care that her step father cannot make himself give her. Instead he terrorizes her mum and her. At the family Annemarie wonders why they only have plastic plates, but receives the explanation from the young woman: “They don’t break when he hits her in the head with them”.
A DO IT YOURSELF KIND OF GIRL
For Annemarie to be able to manage more of the tasks related to the present and coming records, she has taken courses in recording and mix and a lot of the vocals and some of the guitars on “The Girl Without Music” are actu- ally recorded in Annemarie’s home studio in the bedroom. Cause if there’s one thing Annemarie has learned from being a musician and releasing her own music, it is, that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.
