Chihei Hatakeyama who released a lot of works from Kranky amd Room40 in the past, and published a new work from Home Normal and Own Records in succession in 2010. Moskitoo who released an album from 12k, and play an active part as work participation to Simon Scott and Grun Grun, and works as a painter, and is a vocalist of Filfla. Seven leads feed into his nerve centre, and as seven hands pick out one drawn-out chord he works his magic; tuning and manipulating the sound and folding it back on itself across a background of quietly ticking electronica to fill the air around him with glacially mangificent sonic sculpture...building like some submerged orchestra.     Sketches for Albinos is the solo project of Iceland based musician-slash Bedroom Community affiliate Matthew Collings. Now he’s striking out on his own with this debut effort containing sixteen tracks of soft, numbing, shoegaze-y ambient noodlings.

    Listening to the opening track, ‘Sorbonne Midnight’, with its muted underwater piano did make me go ‘God no! It’s Riceboy Sleeps again!’ But after that, there was a lot more going on that the usual ethereal puffwheat that passes for ambient music.

    Thanks to his guitar manipulations, there is a strong ebb and flow in tracks such as ‘A Meeting At The Merry Go Round’, while ‘Red Sky on Fire’ could be comparable to an incredibly spaced out Spiritualized tune.

    While it doesn’t reach out and strike your emotional core, SOBWAK is superior background music for when you absolutely need to zone out of your plane of existence.

    This is the work of Matthew Collings who as far as I am aware hasn’t had a full solo release until now, having previously remixed Fieldhead and had a track on a limited Bedroom Community compilation. Immediately this strikes me as a very personal album and a real labor of love which began in 2004 and was completed this year. Collings effortlessly manages to bring the feelings of his Icelandic surroundings and cosey them up with huge emotionally resonant sounds and gentle vocals. Comes complete with remixes from Moskitoo, Federico Durand and Chihei Hatakeyama).
