Matador Records has been serving up some of the greatest indie music in the world since the label was started in 1989 by Chris Lombardi and Gerard Cosloy, who still run the label along with Patrick Amory, who manages the label. Although they had a brief stint associating with a major label (Capitol Records bought a stake in the company in 1996), the founders bought back the company three years later and now they are part of the mighty Beggars Group (along with XL, 4AD, Rough Trade and some other great independent labels).

Matador acquired True Panther Sounds as an imprint in 2009.
